Review: The False Friend

“The False Friend” by Myla Goldberg is a novel about friendships, trauma and memory and how we can be betrayed by all three. The main character is a young, professional woman named Celia who goes back home to disclose her truth about what happened to her best friend, Djuna, in junior high. The writing was pretty good, but it seemed the novel lacked some depth. I did enjoy reading the book, but was a bit disappointed by the ending. Not my favorite book of all time, but I have read much worse. If you are in the mood for a light read with a fairly interesting story, then you might like this book. (  )

I have some horrible news to report. If you don’t already know (I announced this on youtube and my facebook page) my beloved and super-amazing cat, Kiki, died a little over a week ago. :( Of course, I was devastated, and still am. He was a wonderful companion and friend. I couldn’t have wished for a better cat. A couple of months ago I rushed Kiki to the hospital, because he was very ill. He almost died then, but managed to survive somehow. We thought maybe he had swallowed some medicine or something, but then the other day he had the same symptoms. We now kind of doubt the medicine theory and believe that he may have had a stroke or some kind of neurological problem. I only wish that I had been there with him, so he didn’t have to die alone at the vet. I also never got to say goodbye or hold him one last time. We got him cremated and I now have a small box with his ashes inside. Not the way I wanted him to come home, but at least he is  home now. If only you could have known Kiki, you would have loved him too. I will always miss him.

So, schizophrenia sounds like a really friggin’ scary deal, and, it kind of is, but the odds are that you probably will not develop it. Interestingly enough, schizophrenia effects about 1 percent of the population worldwide according to most statistics. There also seems to be little variation to the 1 percent figure. In other words, developing and developed countries seem to have the same rates of illness. It seems that there is not one place that has more or less of the disease.

Whew! It has been awhile since I have written a tip/trick. The last few months have been crazy, but not really in a good way. Oh well. The tip I’m writing about today has to do with this special time of year for people. This may be rather specific to people who are in the US and/or to people who celebrate certain holidays. Anyway, in the US most people have some holiday that they celebrate or they go on vacation or just have some time off.
