I’m taking a Women’s Studies course at school and we are looking at the topic of Motherhood. This week we are discussing motherhood and disabilities, and I came across this wonderful video series that is made by a student about a mother who has schizophrenia and how it has impacted her life and the life of her daughter. I think he did a really good job! The video is divided into four parts and I hope you watch all four parts! :)

Pink kitties in the works!

Right now I’m working on these pink kitties. I’m making the eyes with felt instead of buttons, because it is for a baby. I’m hoping that babies don’t eat the other stuff on the kitty! lol I’m sewing the stuff on pretty tightly, but babies can be strangely strong! The fat fairy on the pocket is my own design! :)

This is my latest cat project. I’m working on two superhero cats for two different little boys. I’ve finished one of the big cats and two baby cats, but I still need to make the capes for the baby cats. Update: I finished one baby cat cape! Adding pic now. :) I got the supercute superhero fabric from Hawthorne Threads. (Here is a link to the Superhero Fabric) They have some of the best fabric around in my opinion, but I am also glad that the Joann Fabrics near my house has a big selection of fleece! :) If you click the pics you can see an enlarged view. :)

Playing Kitty

Celia from “The Night Circus”

Chicken or Egg

Here is the second set of swatches that I got from Spoonflower.com. I liked the way the little girl (Celia) one turned out, except that it had a couple of holes in the black where I forgot to color in the image, so I’ve updated that and it should be fixed now. :) I think the playing kitty one is interesting, but I also uploaded another one to see what it would look like bigger. With this one it really becomes more about the pattern, which can be good for some projects! I think the little chicken turned out pretty cute too!!! :) Yay!

Vintage Cabbage Patch Kid!

Just wanted to share some pics of my Cabbage Patch Kid that I just dug out of storage! I bought her with $40 that I earned from selling a painting of a kitten that I painted back when I was a kid. She has two outfits. One is her workout clothes complete with headband and kitty sweats. The other is her aqua dress. Plus she has shoes and socks! Oh! And she has her original diaper too! lol. Her name is Felice Veronica, but I don’t know where her birth certificate and adoption papers are. :( Hehe. Click the images to enlarge. :)

Yah, Barbie Totally Needs to Lose Weight!

WHAT?!? Yes, it is true. They now make an even skinnier Barbie! Apparently she wasn’t thin enough, so they have flattened her out some more. It is okay with me, as long as they make a FAT BARBIE, which they never will do! It is hard to say how much Barbie really warps young minds, but I do think she has had some influence over generations of girls. There have been endless discussions about the body image of Barbie of course, but Barbie is only a part of what the issue is. While Americans get fatter, body image issues get more complex and the Hollywood image of beauty gets thinner and thinner. I guess I can’t be too surprised by Barbie’s new look, but did Barbie really have to go there?!? At least her boobs are smaller, but the dolls are seriously anorexic. Barbie was so thin and out of proportion before. What good could come of anorexic Barbie dolls I ask you?

Review: Major Problems in the History of American Families and Children

September 2, 2010 at 11:49 pm | Posted in Academic, American History, Books, Children, Civil War, Families, Family, Frontier, History, Immigrant, Kristin Bell, Major Problems in American History, Native American, Orphans, Primary Sources, Race, Slavery, US History | Leave a comment

“Major Problems In the History of American Families and Children” edited by Anya Jabour is one of the books in the Houghton Mifflin ‘Major Problems in American History’ series. The book is a tremendous resource of both primary source documents and academic writings on the subject of American families and children. The book helps to train college students to look for primary sources and how to evaluate those sources by providing examples of discourse related to many of the primary sources in the book. The primary sources in the book are interesting and provoked further exploration of topics which include families in bondage, Native American, Victorian, frontier, Civil War and immigrant families to name a few. It also tackles the case of orphans, families of the 1950’s, the welfare system and late 20th century family politics. An example of what a good textbook should look and operate like. Bravo! (  )
