This year is the 30th anniversary of the publishing of Shadow on a Tightrope by Aunt Lute Books, and there is a blog carnival this week for the book! I am so happy to be participating. I can’t think of a lot of books that have changed my life, but I would say that this one has. I was about 19 years old when I first picked up SOAT. I was bulimic and fat, and had always been told that being fat was the worst thing in the world to be. In high school I had starved myself down to a “normal” weight, but I gained back some of the weight by the time I was 19 when I was trying to starve myself again. I remember being in Seattle at Bailey Coy Books (now out of business) where I found the book, and later reading the book during my lunch break at the University Bookstore where I worked for a short time. I could not believe what I was reading! For one thing, there were these other fat people out there! Who knew?!? And some of them had endured horrendous surgeries that I didn’t know existed back then (which are all too common now). AND then they were saying that fatness wasn’t the horrid devil wrapped in bacon strips that I had always been told it was! WHAT?!? Did I read that correctly? I didn’t know it at the time, but the book forever changed my outlook on fat and fat activism. Maybe not all at once, but it all stayed with me. It found a little space in my brain, and when everyone else and all of society screamed at me to be thin I remembered the words in SOAT. I remembered (for once) that this experience of being fat was not something I had to do alone, and even though I didn’t stop the bulimia for years, and hated myself for being fat a lot, the messages from SOAT were there working their magic. And, I really think it was like magic that these words in a book could so profoundly alter my view of the world. Years later I stopped the bulimia, and I now consider myself to be a fat activist of sorts, and SOAT is still helping me to figure out how to live with my body and how to live with a world that hates my body. I am forever indebted to Aunt Lute and all of the people who put the book together. I hope that this book can get in the hands of more fat people just so they know that it doesn’t have to be like this, they don’t have to hate themselves, and they aren’t alone.
Hey Everybody! I just wanted to let you know that I had a blog story published over at HealthyPlace.com. Here is the link: http://www.healthyplace.com/blogs/yourmentalhealth/2013/10/30/is-not-disclosing-mental-illness-perpetuating-stigma/ . I hope you read the article and can participate in the conversation. I’m really interested to hear what people think! Thanks! :)
I always get really excited when I start taking new classes, and this year is no exception! This summer I’m excited to take Calc 4, basically vector calculus and Mth256 which is Differential Equations! I’m excited and nervous! I hope things work out okay. I’m also excited about Fall term when I hope to at least take Chemistry and Biology and maybe Advanced Calculus! It might be too much to add the Advanced Calc class, but I really want to keep up with the math skills so I don’t forget it all!!! I’ve actually taken the first term of Chem and Bio before, but it was a long time ago when I wasn’t really doing all that well, and I didn’t really do the homework at that time. Anyway, it was so long ago that I pretty much forgot everything, so I’m going to take them again and hopefully get more into it this time and really understand everything! The unfortunate thing about Chem and Bio at my college is that they only start the sequence in the Fall, so if I want to take the whole year I need to start Fall term. I’m signed up, so I hope it works out! I will have to get up earlier than normal, so that is going to be a challenge that I hope I can tackle. Also, textbooks are ridiculously expensive, but the good thing about Chem and Bio is that they use the same books the whole year, so I’m only out of money for Fall term! I hope I can do it and not drop the classes! :)
I’ve sort of neglected my Etsy store, because I haven’t managed to make it work very well, but I’m going to try to give it a little more love and see if it springs to life a little more. lol. I’m very excited, because I actually had a sale recently! Yay! I also get very excited when people just visit my listings! Etsy keeps track of visitors with stats and stuff like that. I get very OCD about the whole thing I must admit. So, here is a pic of what my storefront looks like pretty much. I mostly have prints for sale, but I’m hoping to add more cats and other things once I get them made. I hope you can stop by and look around. It is really hard to get visitors, because there are like a gazillion gillion people on etsy already. I don’t know how people make it work really! You should be able to click on the image to get to my etsy store page. Thanks a million already!

I just watched the documentary “Welcome To Macintosh” which I purchased for $19.84 (plus tax and shipping from filmbaby.com) and I have to say that it was pretty great. Okay, they couldn’t get an interview with Steve Jobs, but whatever. And, well, probably only Mac people would be so enthralled by this movie, but since I’m a Mac lover it brought me joy! What can I say? I’m not that hard to please! Why do Apple lovers love Apple and love to love Apple and love to talk about how they love Apple? Cult much? Meh! I’m not into cults at all, but I love my computer as much as it is possible to have a fondness for inanimate objects! I’m sorry. I can’t help it. My Mac is my portal to so much joy, you have no idea!
Oh, there are some good
Well, I decided it was about time that I resurrected my other blog site, www.ichbinkeinberliner.com. I started work on it a long time ago, but it was kind of funky with the Apple software I was using for it, so I switched to this WordPress blogging software which I really love. Well, Apple came out with a new update for the blogging software, so I’ve decided to
Hi there! I just changed the look of my site a bit. What do you think? I was
Okay. It is time for me to admit that I just have no control over my senses, pocketbook or body when it comes to cute things. I am beholden to all things cute. If there was a field of landmines between me and something really really cute I would probably make a go for walking through the field of landmines to get the cute thing…well, especially if it was one of my cats!
Hi! I just wanted to share pictures of my fabulous bike with everyone. As you can see, the bike matches my new bike helmet that I talked about in this article. The truth is,
