Well, as you may or may not know, I have quite a few Starbucks collectibles. I’m sorry if that offends you. As I said in a previous post, I know Starbucks is the Evil Empire, but I still don’t really know why. So, until I can really be convinced of it, I continue to go there. In stores now around here they have these cute walrus and polar bear animals that are promoting a movie called Arctic Tale (to find out about the movie go to www.arctictalemovie.com). I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it is by the same people who made March of the Penguins. If you haven’t seen March of the Penguins, you MUST SEE IT! It is a documentary and the footage is amazing and the penguins themselves are absolutely amazing! I have it on DVD and you know what? Now that I am talking about it, I think I might watch it again today. It is just so good. In this new film the filmmakers follow a polar bear and a walrus and show how their lives, like the lives of the penguins, are being transformed by global warming.
By now I hope you are aware that climate change is real and it is happening. Unfortunately, the United States has gone backwards in its commitments to deal with global warming which is especially unfortunate considering that the US is a giant polluter. I’m not saying I’m the most environmentally wonderful person on the planet. I do drive a car and I’m sure there are things I could do better, but at least I recognize global warming as a problem unlike the US government which chooses to keep its head in the sand about this issue…at least with the Bush administration. The issue of global warming and corporate and government involvement seems like a no-brainer to me. The US government and all governments should be pouring money into finding clean ways to do everything we do now. It will improve our lives, the planet, the lives of all Earth’s living things and really, it could be an economic boon! Likewise corporations should be utilizing their resources to find renewable energy. The only reason why we are even still using gas powered vehicles is because the auto industry hasn’t made alternate fuel powered vehicles a priority. And why haven’t they? Because they haven’t gotten support from the government to go in that direction. And why is our government so backwards on this issue? Because the current administration does not realize that global warming is real or else they are just plain dumb. Or both. But, I don’t really want to get into a big political debate here. I just wanted to share my cute polar bear and walrus with you. Let’s just hope that we have real polar bears and walruses in the future and these aren’t the only remnants of them someday.
